How to add hemp seed oil to your pet’s food
Adding hemp seed oil to your pet’s food takes about ten seconds a day. Getting it right, so your dog or cat eats every bite, takes a few small habits. Here is the step-by-step version.

Step 1: Find the right amount
Hemp seed oil is a food oil rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids [1][2], so a little goes a long way. Go by weight and give it once a day:
How much to give, once a day
One dropper ≈ 40 drops.
| Dogs over 50 lbs | 1 full dropper (40 drops) |
| Dogs 21–49 lbs | ½ dropper (20 drops) |
| Dogs under 20 lbs | ¼ dropper (10 drops) |
| Cats | ¼ dropper (10 drops) |
Give it once a day, in the mouth or mixed with food. Ask your vet if your pet takes medication.
One dropper is about 40 drops. If you have a dog and a cat, each pet gets the amount for its own size.
Step 2: Pick one meal
Choose the meal that happens at the same time every day. For most homes that is breakfast. Tying it to a meal means you won’t forget, and your pet gets used to the routine fast.
Step 3: Add it the right way for the food
Wet food. The easiest option. Drip the oil on and stir it in. It blends into pate-style food and disappears.
Dry food (kibble). Drizzle the oil over the kibble, then shake the bowl or stir with a spoon so it coats the pieces evenly. If it pools in one spot, some pets eat around it.
Raw or fresh food. Mix it in the same way as wet food, right before serving.
No food at all. Many dogs lick Chicken or Beef flavor straight off the dropper or a spoon. Some cats will take a drop from a fingertip.
Step 4: Start slow if your pet is fussy
Pets notice new smells. If yours is picky, start with a smaller amount for the first few days and build up to the full amount over about a week. Cats in particular do best with a very gentle start. Our hemp oil for cats guide has tricks that work with picky eaters.
Step 5: Keep the bottle where you feed
Out of sight is out of mind. Store the bottle next to the food bin, cap tight, in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Mistakes to avoid
- Cooking with it. Add the oil to food that is ready to serve, not to a hot pan.
- Doubling up. Missed a day? Just give the usual amount the next day.
- Guessing the amount. Use the dropper and the weight chart. More is not better.
- Switching meals every day. A fixed routine is what makes it stick.
- Forgetting your vet. If your pet takes medication, ask your vet before you start.
Which flavor mixes best?
Original has the mildest taste and disappears into almost any food, which makes it the usual pick for cats. Chicken and Beef are favorites with dogs, and many dogs take them with no food at all. Questions pet parents ask
Can I mix hemp seed oil into dry food?
Yes. Drizzle it over the kibble and shake or stir the bowl so the oil coats the pieces instead of pooling on top.
Should I warm the food first?
There is no need. Add the oil to food that is ready to serve, at room temperature, rather than cooking with it.
What if I miss a day?
Just carry on with the usual amount the next day. Don’t double up.
How much do I add?
Once a day: dogs over 50 lbs 1 dropper, dogs 21 to 49 lbs half a dropper, dogs under 20 lbs and cats a quarter dropper. Ask your vet if your pet takes medication.
How should I store the bottle?
Keep the cap tight and store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
