Hemp oil for cats: a gentle guide for cat parents

Cats notice everything. A new smell in the bowl can mean a full bowl left untouched. The good news: hemp oil for cats is easy to add once you know the right amount and a few tricks.

What is hemp oil for cats?

The hemp oil we make for pets is hemp seed oil: a food oil pressed from hemp seeds. FDA has accepted hemp seed-derived ingredients as safe for use in human food (GRAS) [1]. It is naturally rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, which cats, like all mammals, can’t make on their own [2].

How to get a picky cat to take it

Start tiny. For the first few days, use just a drop or two. Build up to the full quarter dropper over about a week. Most cats never notice the change.

Use wet food. Drops mix into pate-style wet food and disappear. On dry food, stir well so the oil coats the pieces instead of sitting on top.

Pick a mild flavor. Original has the mildest taste and is the easiest first try for most cats. If your cat loves chicken, try Chicken flavor.

Same time, same place. Cats love routine. Add it to the same meal, in the same bowl, every day.

Try the dropper. Some cats will lick a drop or two off your finger or the tip of the dropper, especially Chicken flavor. If yours does, that’s the easiest routine of all.

• Hemp seed oil named plainly as the oil.
• A product made for pets, with an amount for cats, not just dogs.
• A clear statement of no THC.
• A flavor your cat will accept. For most cats that means mild.

When to ask your vet

If your cat takes medication, is pregnant or nursing, or eats a prescription diet, ask your vet before adding anything new. Bring the bottle so they can read the label.
